Progress 01: Creating a terrain
Welcome to the first progress update of Disposition. With these short updates I'll show how I approach certain game design challenges.
Since Disposition is a game about driving along a mountainous coastline, one of the first things I did was creating a terrain. For this I used World Machine. An application in which you can generate large detailed terrains in a short amount of time.
One of my favorite features of World Machine is distortion. It allows you to bend and twist terrain features (like mountain ridges). Making the terrain look less artificially generated and more organic.
When using World Machine it's good to keep in mind that what looks good might not be good for gameplay. Terrains can easily become hard to traverse when filled with steep noisy features. That's why I try to keep a good portion of the terrain relatively flat and smooth.
